5 Hygge Must-Haves

Welcome back! Let’s get right to it: here are our five must-haves for a very hygge winter!

  1. Cozy clothes. Whether this is a favorite bathrobe, some cushy shearling slippers, or a woolen sweater, get your glad rags on, and make sure they’re comfy! Simply getting dressed in an outfit that inspires joy is one of the surest ways to experience hygge.

  2. Hot drinks. Do you prefer tea, coffee, hot cider, or hot cocoa? Let us recommend a trusty Scandinavian staple: mulled wine! Our favorite recipe is Ina Garten’s, which you can make in a slow cooker if you need space on the stove. No matter which hot drink you pick, sitting in your cozies while sipping from a special mug will get you contemplating the little joys of life.

  3. A hyggekrog. In Danish, this means a nook or corner where you feel the most hygge. Set up a corner of the living room with pine boughs, a thick blanket, and your favorite book. Hang up some string lights for ambience, and enjoy the snowy view from the window!

  4. Candles. Not every living space allows for candles, but we feel like battery-operated candles or fairly lights count, too! Just add a couple drops of lavender essential oil to your blanket for the ultimate relaxation experience.

  5. Friends! There’s nothing hygge about holing up in the house alone all winter, even if you’re dressed in your coziest duds surrounded by a million candles. Hygge is all about the genuine human connections that make life worth living! Invite a friend over to share a plate of cookies, or host a game night! It might be tempting to stare at your phone or binge Netflix all day (and night), but the way to a true hygge winter is through connection.

That’s our list of five hygge must-haves, and at first glance, it can look like a long shopping list. Candles, blankets, mulled wine, cookies, cozies, slippers...pursuing hygge can have a steep price tag! But is that really necessary? Check out our next post, and in the mean time...happy hygge to you!
